35W Bridge Collapse

On August 1st the 35W freeway bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during rush hour traffic. We hear about events like this in other parts of the world, and it always seems so surreal. When tragedy strikes so close to home, it really makes you think.

I was nearby when the tragedy occurred, and I took some photos of the rescue workers and onlookers at the scene. By the time I left the scene I could barely get home, because all of the roads to my house had been closed.

The black and white photos are a series of arrests made by a single angry police officer who was charged with securing the perimeter of the scene. He forcefully removed several teenagers who had crossed the perimeter, and in the process dislocated a young girl's shoulder. He got even more angry when they began taking photos, so he started arresting them.
